Interesting facts about Fuengirola

Fuengirola is a municipality of the province of Malaga. It is located on the central coast of the province and is integrated in the region of the Western Costa del Sol. According to the 2015 census, Fuengirola has 77,525 inhabitants.

Fuengirola was founded by the Phoenicians and passed through towns like the Romans, the Byzantines, the Visigoths and the Moors, until its definitive incorporation to the Crown of Castile in 1485.

The beaches of Fuengirola are characterized by being low, sandy and calm waters. The eight km of coastline are divided into seven beaches, ordered from north to south. The beaches are the following: Carvajal, Torreblanca, Los Boliches - Las Gaviotas, San Francisco, Fuengirola, Santa Amalia and Ejido - Castle.

Some monuments and places of interest of Fuengirola are:

  • Sohail Castle:

The castle of Sohail is an Arab citadel built on a former Roman fort. It is located next to the mouth of the Fuengirola River, on a small isolated hill.

Currently in the Castle of Sohail different cultural events are celebrated, like Festival City of Fuengirola, the Medieval Market, concerts or the Celebration of the Beer.

                             

  •  Secretary's farm:

The Finca of the Secretary is a Roman archaeological site constructed between centuries I and V. This deposit is located next to Arroyo Pajares, in the district of Los Pacos. The complex has two distinct areas, a salting factory and a thermal zone.

  • Thermal baths of Torreblanca:

The thermal baths of Torreblanca are of Roman origin and were discovered in the year 1991. This archaeological deposit consists of the remains of a thermal building in magnificent state of conservation.

  • Church of Our Lady of the Rosary:

It is the main Catholic temple of the city, located in the Plaza de la Constitución.

  • Contemporary architecture:

Fuengirola has three buildings included in the catalog of the Andalusian Institute of Historical Heritage as examples of the architecture of the Modern Movement: the Opera Apartments, the Gallery Building and the Municipal Covered Swimming Pool.

  • Bioparc Fuengirola:

The Bioparc of Fuengirola has an area of 2 ha and about 1,300 animals of 140 different species.
