A short history of San Pedro de Alcántara

San Pedro de Alcantara history | Limousines Premier

Although it is a young village, its history belongs to a past epoch: the Roman presence in this area dates back to the Third century, just as is testified by the archaeological remains founded on the Guadalmina river mouth.

In this place we find a paleochristian complex where is possible to visit the Roman baths and 500 meters away the Vega del Mar Basilica, built on the last third of the Fourth century. This basilica, constructed with big boulders fixed with lime mortar, contains hundred of graves. Is likely that, both basilica and necropolis, were part of the so called roman village Cilniana.

Again, in the mouth of Guadalmina River we find a watchtower from the Sixteenth century. This tower was part of the defence system that existed along all the coastline of Málaga.

The industrialization of the area goes back to the Nineteenth century, an historical moment because the TRAPICHE DE GUADAIZA was built, being the first industrial edification dedicated to the sugar processing.

This village was projected by the Marquis of Duero, who created the Agricultural Colony of San Pedro de Alcántara being protected by the Law of Land Reforestation, of 1.885.

In the beginning, this settlement had twelve houses spread over the fertile lowland. Later, the settlement formalized its structure in a small village, with a square in its centre. In the west side was the church, in the north side the San Luis Village and, in the south side, the Guardia Civil quarters and the village inn.

In a short time, the city centre had 146 houses, distributed in three parallel streets, crossing from north to south, and a few transverse streets.

The first-known census dates back from 1860, telling us that this small village had 36 inhabitants. One year later, the population growth up to 529 inhabitants. This increase has its origin on the needs of specialised crop farmers that the Marquis of Duero required for his lands. So that’s why came to the village peasants from Valencia, Murcia, Granada and Almería, historically called “The Settlers”. An innovative and attractive pack of working conditions was offered to this people: home, familiar orchard and a small shop in the market.

It was an ambicious Project actually: small dams were built in order to allow the construction of a small irrigation system. Thanks to that, was possible the introduction of new techniques of intensive cultivations. In other hand, some original and innovative agricultural machinery techniques were imported from America and Europa.
