The first human settlements in the area dates back to the Palaeolithic and Neolithic, as has been demonstrated by the remains of objects found all along the slopes of the Sierra Blanca.
Some oriental civilizations, Phoenicians and Punics especially, inhabited the area in the Seventh century, B.C., being exactly established in the Rio Real zone as it can be discerned after some recent discoveries.
On other hand, Romans were established in the old part of town, known as “Saldaba”. As a result, nowadays it is possible to find a lot of remains inside the borough: the VILLA ROMANA DE RIO VERDE, the GUADALMEDINA Roman Therms etc.
The first references of Marbella on history is in the Middle Age, exactly in geographers and Muslim travellers’ texts.
In the Islamic Period, Marbella was a fortified town. Built in tenth century, it had a powerful castle inside with three doors: Mar, Ronda and Málaga.
The Christians conquered the city the eleventh of June, 1485. Since this historical moment, and all along the Sixteenth century, the urban structure of the city undertake some key changes: the Muslim ‘Medina’, located in the historic downtown, were demolished, and in this place a square was created. Named at that time PLAZA MAYOR or REAL, this square today is nowadays still possible to visit under the name of PLAZA DE LOS NARANJOS. From there, and in order to link it with the PUERTA DEL MAR, the so called CALLE NUEVA was created.
Later on, in the nineteenth century, the first’s blast furnaces of the country were installed, EL ANGEL and LA CONCEPCIÓN, allocated to exploit the iron obtained from the mines of Sierra Blanca. With the industrialization of this area, Malaga as a region became the second most industrial developed province in Spain.
But the most important social transformations of Marbella came up since the Second Republic was established. The social and political mobilizations created at that time were truncated by the Civil War and the subsequent repression of the dictatorial regime. The Italian Fascists’ intervention made Marbella to be considered all along the century as a refuge for important Nazi leaders, and the favourite place for leisure and business of Falangist personalities, huge property speculators and, in a word, the people responsible of planning the town expansion of Marbella.
Forty five years ago, Marbella was essentially an agricultural city, with a great mining industry and no more than 10.000 inhabitants. Today has become one of the most important tourist centres in the world, with more than 26 kilometres of very clean beaches and a beautiful mountainous environment. Furthermore, a very important hotel chain, a fishing port, three leisure harbours, eleven golf courses (one of them a night course), luxury urban complexes, and a huge restaurant and commerce industry.
