The Malaga Airport, 8 km. away from the capital, has pretty good connections with the Costal del Sol and the rest of Andalusia.
The access by road from Malaga and other villages it’s made through the E – 15 freeway and N – 340 road. Also, there is a bus service/shuttle from Malaga and Marbella. Another option to reach the airport is to use the regional/suburban train services that links the cities of Malaga and Fuengirola.
The main air traffic flow is with Europe, mostly with the London Gatwick airport. After that, the main routes are the ones that link the airport with Manchester, Dublin, London Luton, Brussels and Paris Charles De Gaulle.
Within the Iberian Peninsula, the busiest routes are the ones between Malaga and Madrid, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca and Melilla.
The growth of the passengers flow along the last decade has been spectacular: from up to 7 millions in 1997 to almost 10’5 millions in 2002 and 13 millions the last year. The last passenger figures points out that, during August 2007, the passengers’ traffic were more than one million and a half people. During September, the volume of passengers was more than 1’4 millions. And during October, the traffic was almost 1’3 millions of passengers.
Moreover, in 2007 occurred more than 127.000 take offs and landings, with up to 400 daily operations done. Just in August, occurred almost 14.000 flight operations, 12.000 in September and 11.500 in November.
In 2006 5.399 tons of freight goods were carried. Also, more than 200 airlines operated within the airport.
Malaga Airport offers to its passengers a huge range of facilities and services. Emphasize the wide, assorted duty free and commercial area, where we can buy from press and magazines to gifts, fashion and sport articles, food or medicines. Furthermore, five restaurants allow to the passengers to have a pleasant waiting. There is also rent-a-car offices, meeting & V.I.P rooms, eight tour operators to attend to travellers on its arriving, travel agencies, information points and many more.
An important worry has been always the access, to airport in general and particularly to the different services offered, of people with reduced mobility. Therefore, operators has worked and continues working, hard and without a break, in order to suppress the physical barriers that impede the access to this kind of passengers inside the terminal, the parking and the different entries to the airport.
Thanks to this constant effort, all people with reduced mobility using the airport (including passengers, users and workers) can accede easily to its installations. Elevators, ramps and escalators have been constructed in order to allow acceding to the different levels and floors that form the complex, avoiding the stairs. Also, there is an AENA (the Spanish Airports Authority) information service and a customer service, which gives support and information to all passengers, etc.
The Airport Management is not unconnected with the great environmental impact that the complex could produce to the location where the airport resides in. That’s the reason why the airport have developed, within the framework of a quality environmental policy, a Environmental Management system that allow us to indentify and evaluate every activity that have any influence on the environment, aiming to preserve it. This system is certified since 2003 with the ISO rule 14001 – 1996.
All this numbers guarantee that the Malaga Airport is the fourth within the network of Spanish airports and the twenty-fifth within the European network.
