Inside the monumental Heritage of the city we must emphasize the San Luis castle. Located right in the urban area, its construction is dated back to the 16th century. Some other important remains to visit are the Castle of El Nicio, from 9th century, and the Clock Tower (that was part of the Fortress Church), from 15th century. This Arabic-origin tower was probably in origin a mosque minaret, but due to the catholic conquer this mosque became a church, and the tower a belfry.
The Virgen de Los Remedios church, dated in 18th Century, was occupied until the 19th century by the Franciscan Fathers. That’s why we can observe in this building an odd mix of styles, such rococo or some other styles typical of the Spanish American colonial architecture.
The “Almenara” towers (or watchtowers), having its origin in the Muslim culture, are the vestiges of the coastline defence system, which use were prolonged until the 19th century. In the Christian period, and for protect the area from pirates, were started up a smoke signals system (by day) and a luminous signals system (by night) between towers. Thanks to this system it was possible to warn people very quickly about the possibility of enemies disembark. Along the 21 km. length of coastline we find 7 towers: Arroyo Vaquero watchtower, Saladavieja Tower, Padrón or Paredón Tower, Velerín Tower (very close to the prestigious El Velerín estate), Guadalmansa or Desmochada Tower (located inside the green area of the Cabo Bermejo estate), Saladillo Tower and Casasola or Baños Tower.
The natural environment of Estepona also offers us some spots to visit, like the Pedregales Park, where is located the so-called enclave of Castillejos. In this place, settled on the top of a hill, we find the remains of a prehistoric fortress (rebuilt by the muslins).
Another natural area to visit is the one besides Guadalmansa River. We find therein remains of a roman village, a watchtower named alike and a museum site.
Also interesting to visit is the Selwo Park, located besides the Costa del Sol railway. Within it we find wild animals roaming in a semi-freely state, breeding the life conditions of the different species.
The mountain landscape of Estepona is shaped by Sierra Bermeja, having this name due to the particular reddish colour of its land (for a highly graduated iron composition). To stress the Los Reales peak, with 1449 meters of altitude, from which we can gaze at a splendid Costa del Sol outlook, the Rock of Gibraltar and even the Morocco Coast on clearly days.
Incredibly beautiful are its lush forests of Spanish firs, chestnut trees and pine trees. The Spanish fir is a typical sort of flora in the Mediterranean area, because it born in the proximities of the sea. Nowadays there are just a few specimens of this kind of tree in the south of Spain and in the Urals Mountains, Russia. The Spanish fir woods fauna is compounded by roe deers, mountain goats, martens, wild cats, wild boars and many more.
Of course is a must the astonishing bullring, opened in 1972: with an asymmetric design, is unique in the world.
The city has, also, an Archaeological Museum that contains and preserve a lot of remains found within the city and its outskirts. The “Piloceno de Estepona” or the Palaeontology Municipal Museum, the “Antonio Ordoñez” Taurine Museum and the “Aperos del Campo y Mar” Ethnographic Municipal Museum completes the museums city offer.
At last we don’t have to rule out a visit to the selected estates that settles the area. Especially luxurious, for its houses and gardened areas are the ones located between Puerto Banús, San Pedro and Estepona. Among them we must emphasize the exclusive Urbanizacion Dunas Park estate, a luxurious complex with a hotel and Andalusia Estates style houses. The complex is located at beachfront, incredibly overlooking the sea, the Africa coastline, and surrounded by exuberant gardens. Mention also another incredible estate, Urbanización El Campanario, located in the same area, between sea and mountain, surrounded by golf courses and gifted with the natural beauty of the area.
